Planning a 14-day Japan trip eventually turned into train schedules, hotel check-ins, reservation windows, and a pinned map that kept growing.
This was our trip: April 29 to May 12, 2026, flying into Narita and out of Haneda. Lorna planned most of this route, and we wanted enough time in Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Miyajima without making every day feel like a transfer day.
One thing Lorna sorted out early: the JR West Pass. If your route includes the Osaka–Hiroshima stretch, it cuts down both cost and friction, and it's worth checking before you start pricing individual legs.

Trip route at a glance
City-level route for this 14-day itinerary, including the overnight Hiroshima stop, the Miyajima visit, the Kobe side trip, and the Narita-in/Haneda-out airport flow.
This is a city-level overview only. Use the day-by-day plan below for neighborhood stops and detailed transit steps.
Practical note: The hotels below are the ones we booked, but area matters more than brand. Ginza/Kyobashi in Tokyo, easy Honmachi or Namba access in Osaka, near Hiroshima Station for the overnight, and the Kawasaki/Yokohama side before departure keep this route smooth.
Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo and Keep the First Night Light
-
Date: April 29, 2026.
-
Arrived at Narita Airport at 4:00 PM.
-
Cleared immigration around 5:00 PM.
-
Took a from Narita to Tokyo Station (5:25 PM departure, 6:45 PM arrival).
-
Checked in at remm Hotel Tokyo Kyobashi.
-
Had dinner at Nobunaga Ramen.
-
Went to Shibuya.
-
Shopped at Bic Camera and Don Quijote.
Landing day moved slower than expected. Immigration took a while, then the bus into Tokyo, then figuring out the area around the station. By the time we dropped our bags we only wanted dinner and a short walk.

Cooks at Nobunaga Ramen preparing orders during the dinner rush.
Thought about one more stop after Shibuya, but skipped it. Already tired from the flight and all the transit, so calling it early was the right call.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- KITTE Marunouchi.
- Godzilla Statue in Hibiya.
Day 2: Ginza and Central Tokyo Highlights
-
Date: April 30, 2026.
-
Went to Ginza.
-
Had brunch at Yoshinoya.
-
Had coffee at Bongen Coffee.
-
Shopped at Itoya Ginza, GU, and Uniqlo.
-
Had dinner at Yakiniku Azasu Ginza.
-
Went to Akihabara.
-
Shopped at Yodobashi Camera.
Day 2 felt easier than arrival day. We spent most of it moving between Ginza and Akihabara, and by evening the trains and station exits were starting to make more sense.
By late afternoon my shoulder started hurting from carrying my Peak Design Everyday Backpack v1 20L. After checking reviews that night, I found it was a commonly reported issue with that model's shoulder straps, so I went to Yodobashi Camera and replaced it with a Shimoda Designs Explore V2 25L kit, which was much more comfortable.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
Kabukiza was the one thing I kept thinking about for this day. The timing never quite lined up, which is why I left it for another trip.
- Kabukiza Theatre (book ahead).
Day 3: Odaiba and Akihabara
-
Date: May 1, 2026.
-
Went to Odaiba.
-
Visited Aqua City.
-
Visited DiverCity Tokyo Plaza and saw the Gundam statue.
-
Went to Akihabara.
-
Shopped at Yodobashi Camera and AmiAmi.
-
Had dinner at Coco Ichibanya.
It rained hard most of the day, so Odaiba became an indoor loop. We stayed mostly in Aqua City and DiverCity, then headed to Akihabara in the evening so the day did not end too early.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Gundam Base inside DiverCity (requires advance booking).
- Odaiba Seaside Park (better in dry weather).
- Radio Kaikan.
- Habikoro Toys.
- Mandarake.
- Beep Akihabara.
- Japanime Art Gallery.
Day 4: Ueno, Ashikaga Flower Park, and Asakusa

-
Went to Ueno.
-
Took the Shinkansen out toward Oyama.
-
Visited Ashikaga Flower Park.
-
Returned to Asakusa later in the day.
-
Visited Sensō-ji.
-
Ended the day with Sukiya.
Plans changed early. We took the Shinkansen out toward Oyama for Ashikaga Flower Park, then came back through Asakusa before dinner. The weather kept shifting, so we adjusted as we went.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Nakamise Shopping Street.
- Kappabashi for kitchenware.
- Sasugaya Outlet.
Day 5: Shibuya and Shinjuku City Day
-
Date: May 3, 2026.
-
Went to Shibuya.

-
Had dinner at Gyukatsu Motomura.
-
Stopped by Flags mall.
-
Shopped at GAP and Tower Records.
-
Passed by the Calico cat billboard.
This was a simple city day: Shibuya first, then Shinjuku. Shinjuku Gyoen was the quiet break, then Gyukatsu Motomura before more mall stops and the train back.
I was already running low on camera batteries from the previous days, so I started in Shibuya to buy extras before continuing with the rest of the plan.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Meiji Jingu Shrine.
- Takeshita Street.
- Cat Street.
- Omotesando walk.
- AP LAB Tokyo.
- Hachiko Statue.

Walked to Ginza.
-
Shopped at MUJI.
-
Went to Ginza Six.
-
Stopped by the Ginza Six rooftop.
-
Had brunch at Eataly.
-
Shopped at Tsutaya Books.
-
Traveled to Ikebukuro.
-
Went to PARCO.
-
Visited the Capcom store.
-
Visited the Square Enix store.
-
Visited VIZ Media store.
-
Shopped at Animate, AmiAmi, and ABC-MART.
-
Went to Sunshine City Mall.
Mostly walking and train hops on this one. We started in Ginza for MUJI, Ginza Six, and Tsutaya, then moved to Ikebukuro for the Capcom, Square Enix, and Animate stretch. By Sunshine City our feet were done, so we wrapped it there.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Canon showroom in Ginza.
- Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo (inside Sunshine City — was temporarily closed at the time of our visit; worth checking current status before going).
Day 7: Mt. Fuji Day Tour from Tokyo
-
Date: May 5, 2026.
-
Joined a guided Mt. Fuji day tour from Tokyo.
-
Stopped at Fuji Motosuko Resort.
-
Stopped at the Lawson Mt. Fuji viewpoint.
-
Visited Fuji Sengen Shrine.
-
Returned to Tokyo in the evening.
We swapped the city plan for a guided day tour. Not having to plan every transfer made the day easier, and I could just focus on the viewpoints and photos.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Shinjuku Gyoen.
- Shinjuku Godzilla (East Exit area).
- Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (West Exit views).
- Okadaya (crafts).
- Kiddyland (toys).
- Book-Off (secondhand books).
Day 8: Transfer from Tokyo to Osaka
-
Date: May 6, 2026.
-
Checked out of remm Hotel Tokyo Kyobashi before departing for the transfer.
-
Took the Shinkansen to Osaka (about 2.5 hours).
-
Picked up the JR West Pass at Shin-Osaka Station.
-
Checked in at Tokyu Stay Osaka Honmachi.
-
Had dinner at the Pokémon Cafe after check-in.
-
Spent the evening in Dotonbori and shopped at Don Quijote.
The Osaka Shinkansen leg was the one train ride I wanted to get right. I sat on the right side for a Mt. Fuji window view.
We shipped our checked luggage from our Tokyo hotel on departure day, so it traveled overnight and arrived at our Osaka hotel the next day.
After check-in we kept the evening simple: dinner at the Pokémon Cafe, then a walk through Dotonbori before heading back to the hotel.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Solaniwa Onsen (private onsen wind-down).
Day 9: Osaka City Day
-
Date: May 7, 2026.
-
Visited the YTV Station building to see the bronze statues of characters from the Detective Conan series.
-
Stopped at the Starbucks across the bridge after the YTV Station building, on the way to Osaka Castle.
-
Visited Osaka Castle and walked around the castle park.
-
Traveled to Namba.
-
Had dinner at Sushiro.
Started at YTV for the Detective Conan statues, grabbed Starbucks across the bridge on the way to Osaka Castle, then finished in Namba for dinner.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Osaka Maishima Seaside Park (seasonal flower viewing, last entry 4:30 PM).
Day 10: Osaka to Hiroshima
-
Date: May 8, 2026.
-
Departed Osaka at 11:40 AM on the Hello Kitty Shinkansen (JR West Pass).
-
Checked in at Sotetsu Fresa Inn Hiroshima.
-
Had brunch at Costco before heading into the city.
-
Visited Peace Memorial Park.
-
Visited Atomic Bomb Dome.
-
Went to Hondori Shopping Arcade.
-
Shopped at Yellow Submarine.
-
Went to PARCO.
Lorna booked the Hello Kitty Shinkansen early, and it was honestly a fun part of the transfer day.
We gave Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome most of the afternoon. Staying overnight in Hiroshima made that possible. Trying to do Hiroshima and Miyajima in one long day would have been a rush.
Alternatives / Not Done This Day
- Okonomimura (if you want a Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki dinner stop).
- Orizuru Tower (city views near the Atomic Bomb Dome; last entry 5:30 PM).
Day 11: Hiroshima Checkout, Miyajima, Then Return to Osaka
-
Date: May 9, 2026.
-
Checked out of Sotetsu Fresa Inn Hiroshima.
-
Left our luggage in storage lockers at Hiroshima Station.
-
Headed to Miyajima:
- Saw Itsukushima Shrine and its Otorii Gate
- Had lunch on the island
- Walked Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street
- Visited Momijidani Park
-
Started the return to Osaka after sunset (about 3 hours total travel), so arrival was later in the evening (JR West Pass).
Day 11 was the packed one. We checked out of Hiroshima, ferried over, spent the afternoon on Miyajima, then caught a train back to Osaka in the evening. One delay anywhere and the whole sequence compresses. Ferry schedules mattered here — some of the torii-view options shut down earlier than the standard crossings, so that's the first thing to confirm before the day arrives.
The Itsukushima Shrine and the Otorii Gate were the real stops. Lunch and the shopping street happened because there was time.
Day 12: Kobe and Nunobiki Herb Gardens
-
Date: May 10, 2026.
-
Took a JR train west from Osaka to Kobe (JR West Pass).
-
Visited Nunobiki Herb Gardens for the afternoon.
-
Took the ropeway to the top for city views and garden exploration.
-
Returned to Osaka for the night.
We took a day trip to Kobe to break up the journey. Nunobiki Herb Gardens felt like a good stop—the ropeway ride up gave clear views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. We spent the afternoon there and headed back to Osaka for the night.
Day 13: Osaka to Kawasaki
-
Date: May 11, 2026.
-
Checked out of Tokyu Stay Osaka Honmachi.
-
Took the Shinkansen back toward Tokyo and continued to Kawasaki.
-
Checked in at Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kawasaki-Higashiguchi.
-
Shopped at Bic Camera.
-
Had dinner at Saizeriya.
We checked out of Osaka and took the Shinkansen to Kawasaki for the final night before the airport. We didn't try to fit much in — walked around a bit, had dinner at Saizeriya, and called it early.
Day 14: Departure Day from Tokyo
-
Date: May 12, 2026.
-
Checked out of Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kawasaki-Higashiguchi.
-
Took the Keikyu Airport Line from Keikyu Kawasaki Station to Haneda Airport Terminal 3 for the flight.
The flight was in the afternoon, so there was time for one last coffee before heading to the airport. We left with three hours to spare, which was the right call.
Travel Tips and Booking Notes
- JR West Pass: For this route (Osaka–Hiroshima roundtrip, Miyajima side trip, and Osaka–Kobe), point-to-point fares would have been around ¥23,000, so the pass paid off for us.
- Golden Week timing: These dates overlap Japan's busy Golden Week period, so hotels and long-distance trains may book earlier than usual.
- Before locking in dates: Verify time-sensitive details directly with official sources—especially attraction hours, ferry schedules, themed train operating days, and any reservation requirements—since these can change by season or day of week.
- Luggage forwarding: Probably most useful for bigger intercity moves: Tokyo to Osaka and Osaka back to the Tokyo/Kawasaki–Yokohama side. Probably not necessary for day trips.
- Hotels: If you want popular areas like Ginza or Shibuya, booking early is safer.
- Narita airport transfer: The low-cost bus from Narita to Tokyo Station runs around ¥1,500 per person and is one of the cheapest options. The Narita Express (N'EX) is faster but closer to ¥3,000–¥3,500. Factor this in when budgeting arrival day — it's easy to overlook.
- Kawasaki to Haneda Airport: Use the Keikyu Airport Line from Keikyu Kawasaki Station to Haneda Airport Terminal 3. It's straightforward and doesn't require a Shinkansen reservation.
- Shinkansen seats: Reserve key long-distance legs early, especially with luggage or fixed dates, and give yourself a little extra platform time on transfer days.
- Cash: Japan is more card-friendly than before, but we still wouldn't rely on cards everywhere.
- Transit cards: Suica and ICOCA are available as mobile cards in Apple Wallet (iPhone/Apple Watch), which makes tap-in transit and convenience-store payments easier. If you don't use Apple devices, check physical IC card availability at your arrival airport/station.
- Daily pacing: We aimed for 2–3 real priorities per day, with everything else optional. That's the main reason this plan stayed manageable.
Budget Guide for This Japan Trip
- Lean budget: Plan around ¥10,000-¥16,000 per day with hostels or business hotels, simple meals, and mostly local transit.
- Mid-range comfort: Plan around ¥16,000-¥28,000 per day with private hotel rooms, a mix of casual and sit-down meals, and paid attractions.
- More flexible spend: Plan around ¥28,000+ per day if you want upscale stays, splurge meals, frequent taxis, or heavier shopping.
Price Snapshot (Approximate)
- Accommodation: About ¥5,000-¥15,000/night (higher in major areas and during peak seasons).
- Food: About ¥2,000-¥6,000/day, depending on convenience-store meals versus restaurant-heavy days.
- Local transport: About ¥800-¥2,500/day for trains and subways; intercity trips are extra.
- Intercity trains: Usually ¥10,000-¥20,000+ per leg, depending on route and seat class.
- Attractions/experiences: Often ¥1,000-¥6,000/day, depending on your pace.
Note: Treat these as planning ranges, not fixed prices—season, city, booking timing, and travel style can shift costs noticeably.
That was the route: Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Kobe, Ashikaga, and Mt. Fuji — the places we most wanted to see, with enough buffer that none of the days felt like a race.
Two to three real priorities per day, everything else optional. That's what kept it from getting exhausting.
